Include Extra Days for Lukla Flight Delays
When planning a Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek or any Everest region trek, it’s wise to add 2-3 buffer days to your itinerary. Lukla flights are frequently delayed or canceled due to unpredictable mountain weather, even in peak seasons.
Extra days provide flexibility, reduce stress, and help ensure you don’t miss international flights or important plans, making your trek safer and more enjoyable.
-
Ramechhap Airport: Alternative to Kathmandu–Lukla Flights During Peak Season
During the busy trekking seasons (mainly spring: March–May and autumn: September–November), flights to Lukla are no longer operated from Kathmandu Airport due to air traffic congestion. Instead, flights are diverted to Ramechhap Airport (also known as Manthali Airport), located about 132 km east of Kathmandu.
Trekkers must travel 4–5 hours by road from Kathmandu to Ramechhap in order to catch an early morning flight to Lukla. While this adds an extra travel segment, it improves the chances of timely departures and reduces flight congestion.
-
Accommodation
During the Rapid Everest Base Camp hike, you'll stay in handpicked teahouses that provide basic yet comfortable amenities, such as twin-sharing beds and warm blankets. Most stops offer hot showers and charging facilities, though these often require a small extra fee. During peak trekking seasons, early reservations are recommended to secure better lodging.
Please note that meals and accommodations in Kathmandu are not included in the trek package. However, the city has a wide range of options to suit all budgets.
-
Internet Service
Wi-Fi is available at most tea houses along the trail, typically through prepaid Everest Link cards. While the signal tends to weaken at higher elevations, it's usually sufficient for messaging and light browsing.
-
Travel Insurance
Purchasing travel insurance is non-negotiable when undertaking the Rapid Everest Base Camp Trek or any other high-altitude trek in the Himalayas. The risks associated with rapid altitude gain, unpredictable mountain weather, and remote terrain make insurance not just a smart decision, but a vital one.
